Historical Undergarments

Over the next year we hope to build several half-scale, historic undergarments in order to demonstrate both accurate silhouette and the contemporary products used for building these garments. The garments pictured on the following pages have been built using the information provided by Jean Hunnisett in her books "Period Costume for Stage & Screen -Patterns for Women's Dress 1500-1800" and "Period Costume for Stage & Screen - Patterns for Women's Dress 1800 - 1909".

The garments were drafted by Cynthia McLennan, recently retired from the Stratford Shakespearean Festival Theatre and stitched by her as well. It is important to understand the half-scale garments are not much less time consuming than full-scale garments, as these are detailed pieces. Approximate times will be listed for the construction of each set. Keep in mind that these times are based on the hours required by a very experienced Costume Cutter.
