Ribbon Corset

This was my first and only attempt at a Ribbon corset. I used 2” wide (50mm) petersham ribbon – item #78-7650-90 and a small amount of coutil for front and back..

I have no idea how ribbon corsets were really made but I used a draping technique and built the ribbon corset over another corset.

This photo illustrates the corset underneath and the ribbons pinned into place to accommodate the hip area and create the same shape as the original corset.

Using white pencil I drew lines on the ribbons for the placement of center front and back.

I trimmed off the excess ribbon ends and pinned all the pieces together so that I had two solid units to remove from the mannequin – left and right sides. I made the fronts complete with busk and attached them to the ribbons; encasing the cut ends between the two layers of coutil. I used lacing bones in the back and encased the cut ends of the back ribbons between the two layers of coutil here and was done. It was not a long process but being an experimental one it did take awhile.
